Education Committee Report 9/9/10

Sept. 9, 2010

Nolette Serra

“Get Smart” – Tagalog Class II ended on August 28.  The Tagalog class was attended by 18 students. Teacher Lorlie Sardinia was assisted by Narcita Eugenio and Nolette Serra.  The class was differentiated because it ranged from Kindergarten to Middle school grades. It was suggested that the levels will have to be separated next time.  Having many levels presents many challenges in a language class.  The next Tagalog class for children may be offered in October depending on the availability of an instructor.

Thank you  to Alma Kern who bought a collection of children’s Filipino attire to be used for their performances and a variety of teaching materials to be used in the language and culture class.  The teachers truly appreciate her taking the time and energy to supply them with materials they need to make the classes fun and meaningful. The children looked great at the Family Affair.

“Family Affair” informational fair for families on August 28, 2010 was a successful and well attended event.  Annabel Garcia-Andresen was the chairperson for this event.  Thanks to her organizational skills and leadership, this event was a success.  Several organizations participated such as Asian Counseling and Referral Service, International Community Health Services( Farm Sirisirangka),  Filipino Lawyers of Washington (Asser Aldana and Mimi Castillo) , Wells Fargo Bank (Sharon Chan, Joy Sumabat , Maegan dorman- Gigi Hagen) , Filipino American Educators of Washington (Minnie Erickson and Minda Wilson, Marissa Winmil, Grace Saturnino)  Filipino American National Historical Society Dorothy and Fred Cordova ,Damian and Judy Cordova)  Seattle Emergency Management Services,  (Roger Serra), FCS Kultura,  Maria Batayola and Filstar, Katrina Pestano and Jeff Rice, and the new FCS Get Smart Parent Club and parents Virgie Purganan, Jesseth Garcia-Scott, Judy and Damian Cordova, Annaliza Marin, Nelsea Babauta, and Belen Johnson.  There were at least 100adults and dhildren.  Families enjoyed a delicious lunch $5 cooked by Ramon Maramba and teacher Lorlie Sardinia and Judy Cordova led the students in performing dances, songs, and a skit. They also played sunka, jacks, and made flags.  Stories were read to them aloud by  parent Judy Cordova and pictures were taken of children dressed in native costumes.   There were beautiful displays brought in by the Eugenio Family as well as the different organizations represented. The Parents sold espasol and kuchinta and conducted a raffle and a Parent Survey.  Money raised would go for seed money for Parent Club activities.  There were several student volunteers who earned community service hours for the event.  The goal of this event was to establish an annual community event for families to meet and receive information and get to know resources that they can access in the community, and also to establish a parent club.  We now have the beginnings of parent leadership and future parent trainings will be provided by our own community resource people, the Seattle School District and partnership with the Community and Parents for Public Schools.   According to the Parent Survey conducted, the following educational  and cultural trainings were of  great interest to parents and will be added to the other educational presentations already being done by Get Smart Committee members:

                        Effective Parenting

                        Assertiveness training

                        Adolescent years

                        Cultural dances for children

Improvement Suggestions for next year:

Bigger room, use of the ballroom to accommodate more than 100 people and displays, and performances on a Saturday- a day  when families can attend.  FCSboard discussion needed.

                        Better prizes

Volunteers are allowed to participate in the drawings

                        More practice time for performances

                        Improve media advertising

                        Better publicity to parents

Thank you to Boardmembers were present: Ning Rogge, Jeff Rice, Maria Batayola, and FCS rep for Domestic Violence,  Myrna Victoriano and Filstar Katrina Pestano.  Thank you to Get Smart Committee Efren Pascua, Alan Garcia and Agnes Garcia, Rommel de las Alas, Narcita and Ever Eugenio and Family, Lorlie and Louven Sardinia and mom who volunteered in the kitchen and to Annabel Garcia-Andresen for chairing the event .  Thanks to all the parents children and student volunteers who collaborated in making the first annual “Family Affair” a successful and event.
