Her Aim is True

SPT presents the Seattle Premiere of A. Rey Pamatmat’s

EDITH CAN SHOOT THINGS AND HIT THEM
at the Bathhouse Theater on Green Lake

March 29 – April 21, 2013

SEATTLE, WA– SPT is proud to present the Seattle Premiere of Edith Can Shoot Things and Hit Them by Princess Grace Award for Playwriting recipient and the Harold and Mimi Steinberg ATCA New Play Award Finalist A. Rey Pamatmat, running March 29-April 21, 2013 at the historic Bathhouse Theater on Green Lake.

ABOUT EDITH CAN SHOOT THINGS AND HIT THEM

After being all but abandoned by their widower father, Filipino-American teenagers Edith and Kenny form a latchkey family that becomes all the more unconventional when Kenny develops romantic feelings for his classmate, Benji. The strength of their fragile bond is challenged as the adult world conspires to pull the three apart.

"I first saw Edith Can Shoot Things and Hit Them in its world premiere production at the 2011 Humana Festival of New American Plays,” says Director David Gassner. “It was unquestionably the hit of that year's festival, and was beloved both for its humor, and for its profound gentleness. It's about a trio of young outsiders who find themselves no longer welcome in their own families. Two gay teens on the edge of manhood learn from a 12-year-old girl what it means to be adults. Ultimately, all three kids learn to stand up to the world and claim their lives.”

“The story of Edith is so fresh, so compelling, and the characters familiar and yet so different from others we’ve ever met,” says SPT Artistic Director, Shana Bestock. “I admire them and ache for them. We want to help them and protect them, and are angry with the adults who have let them down. At the same time, we cheer their resilience, and their capacity for an authentic and beautiful connection.”

Edith Can Shoot Things and Hit Them features the acting talents of Sara Porkalob, Jose Abaoag, and Tim Smith-Stewart.

Edith Can Shoot Things and Hit Them is directed by David Gassner (SPT’s The Happy Ones and BASH and Radial Theater Project’s Beating Up Bachman), stage managed by Blair Feehan and features the design talents of Dan Schuy (Scenic Design), Amiya Brown (Lighting Design), Rob Witmer (Sound Design), K.D. Schill (Costume Design) and Cole Hornaday (Props).

With such an inspiring play guaranteed to touch a broad spectrum of the community, SPT is planning two lively and insightful post-show discussions involving the Edith cast and crew along with representatives from both the Filipino Community of Seattle (FCS) as well as the young writers from Edmond’s Scriber Lake High School who shared their personal struggles in the book, We Are Absolutely Not Okay: Fourteen Stories By Teenagers Who are Picking Up the Pieces.

April 7th, 2013 following 2pm Sunday matinee

Featuring the young writers from Scriber Lake High School’s

Pinoy Words Expressed Kultura Arts presents

Florodora Reimagined

Pinoy Words Expressed Kultura Arts, a Filipino arts and literary organization,
presents two performances of Florodora Reimagined on Friday, October 19th and Saturday, October 20th at the Filipino Community Center, 5740 Martin Luther King Way South, Seattle, Washington. This delightful musical comedy is peppered with phrenology, no-touch love scenes, and ghosts. The show on Friday, October 19th is free to the public and sponsored by Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs. Friday’s show begins at 7:30 p.m. The gala on Saturday, October 20th includes dinner and a special performance by the Filipino American Society Chorale. Saturday’s dinner seating begins at 6.p.m. with the show at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for October 20th can be purchased for $25 at www.brownpapertickets.com/.

The original Florodora is an 1899 English musical comedy set in the Philippines with book by Owen Hall, lyrics by E. Byrd Jones and Paul Rubens, and music by Leslie Stuart. An American businessman attempts to cheat a beautiful young Filipino heiress out of her rights to a famous perfume business by marrying her. The musical draws its name from the phrase Flor (flower) odor (odor-scent) ahh (delightful), thought to be the Sampaguita, the national flower of the Philippines, from which the perfume is extracted. Set at the time of the Philippine-American War and growing US imperialism, the musical will now be re-imagined from a Filipino perspective.

It has been adapted by Charles Baker, co-producer Arnaldo Inocentes and director Maria Batayola. Inocentes explains what inspired his interest; “Revival is important to me because of the relevance of the musical not only in the history of the American musical (Florodora was a huge success in both London and New York), but also with its timing in Filipino-American history (the Philippines became a US colony in the late 1890's).   Though the setting was in the Philippines, the original script had no Filipino cultural references. This provided us with an opportunity to adapt the material by making it more Filipino, thus reclaiming it in Florodora Reimagined.”

Charles Baker adds, “Florodora has had many revivals in its history and even a few in recent years.  A revival of the original musical as it was performed in 1900 is not the aim of Florodora Reimagined. Our goal instead is a respectful but radical transformation of the show, extending and sharpening the comedy and social commentary in a streamlined, coherent script.”

The production is funded by the Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, ArtsCrush, the Filipino Community of Seattle and by individual donations to Pinoy Words Expressed Kultura Arts.

Hypin’ up the Filipino Community Center

After an exciting showing at Seattle Center’s FESTÁL celebration Pagdiriwang, Hypin’ up Young Pinoy/ay Entertainers (H.Y.P.E) is coming to the community!  With a combination of returning 2012 Summer H.Y.P.E performers and new participants, September H.Y.P.E promises to entertain and inspire our community.  On September 21, 2012 performers and artists will converge at the Filipino Community Center to share their talent with the community.  The event will run from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm with doors opening at 7:00 pm.

September H.Y.P.E will bring to the stage the hype it is known for with a combination of dance groups, musicians, hip hop artists, and a mini fashion show.  Lighting up the stage with their smooth and electric moves will be Kontagious, Rated PG, and Lil’ Rascalz.  Kontagious will be returning to the H.Y.P.E stage for its 3rd consecutive year!  Joining the mix of talent includes newcomers to H.Y.P.E ZaiSean and Johnny Nguyen.  Michael Villanueva and the band Smooth Technique will also bring both familiar and original songs to the stage.  Vocalists Takeshia Seward and Kevin Quimosing will also lend their talent to the show.  The evening will also feature fashion from FLYY Apparel during the mini fashion show and music provided by a DJ.  Battalion Entertainment will once again provide stage management and advertising support as it has since the inception of H.Y.P.E.  September H.Y.P.E plans to confirm more artists soon and will publicize the final line-up on its FaceBook page.

H.Y.P.E strives to provide opportunities for up and coming artists on a main stage while introducing them to networking opportunities amongst the groups and/or general public by also providing a printed program to attendees and participants.  The printed program includes information about the performers or artists and ways of contacting the group/individual.  The H.Y.P.E planning committee, Charmaine Felix, Annabel Garcia-Andresen, and LeMar Mattox, created this program to support our Filipino and Filipino American youth in their creative endeavors.  Their hope was that the youth would see this as an opportunity to showcase their talent to a wider audience range including multigenerational and diverse communities as well as to build a stronger performing arts and arts community.
