Monkees,
Scholars to raise money for Philippine victims
Seattle's
award-winning break dance crew Massive
Monkees and the hip-hop group The Blue
Scholars set to perform a benefit show Sunday for victims of the tropical
storm Ketsana.

Ketsana
(also known as Ondoy) struck the Philippines on Sept. 26, causing floods
throughout the country. Typhoon
Parma followed a week later, causing landslides.
The
disasters have left 320 dead and nearly a million homeless.
"It
hit home for all of us," said Massive Monkees member Rodericko Francisco.
"Many of us have family and friends who have been affected."
Massive Monkees planned to take a week break after seven
weeks away from families while competing on the hit MTV show America's Best
Dance Crew -- but put their plans on hold to be a part of the benefit concert.
"We
had to do something about it," Francisco said. "We also put some
other shows on hold to reach out to those in need."
Sunday's
show will mark the first time Massive Monkees and The Blue Scholars, two of the
most famous Seattle acts, share a stage.
"At
this point this is the only show scheduled for the benefit event," said
Brysen Angeles of the Massive Monkees." If we can make this show
successful and get some heavier backers behind us we'd like to do shows down
the west coast, to help our people back home."
Funds
raised will aid the relief efforts of UNICEF
and ABS-CBN Foundation.
The
family that brings in the biggest donation will receive a Massive Monkees
medallion custom made by Francisco.
The
all-ages benefit concert will begin 2 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Filipino Community Center and will be
followed by the 21+ after party benefit concert beginning at 8 p.m. at the Crocodile Cafe.
ABS-CBN,
The Filipino
Channel, will provide national and international event coverage.
