May, as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, is a time to recognize and celebrate the rich cultures of Asian American and Pacific Islanders and their contributions to Washington State’s economic, social, and democratic institutions. We encourage you to designate time for activities commemorating the lives, history, achievements, and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
The diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander population in Washington State numbers more than 470,361 with over 47 distinct communities, representing various languages, dialects, cultures, and immigration patterns. In 2000, the Washington State Legislature declared the month of May as a time for people of this state to celebrate their contributions in the arts, sciences, government, education, and commerce.
